Sri Lanka is and island country lying in the Indian ocean. It consists only 65,610 km². Its coastline is 1,340 km long. The most part of the country is very greenish. Sri Lankan handicrafts have a history that runs back to millenniums since it evolved as a cottage industry. People made handicrafts out of natural raw materials which can found around the villages very easily and turned them into exotic artworks by using time tested age-old techniques. The traditional skills and their characteristics identities still preserved within the families.
Objects carved in wood, made of brass and silver, decorated with lacquer, handloom textiles and lace, beautiful reed mats, attractive batiks, pottery, masks, are among the handicraft items made by the traditional craftsmen of Sri Lanka.
